Back in 1689 when the Claim of Right was added to the Treaty of Union [Parliaments] as a kind of insurance policy, the Kirk being part of the Convention of the Estates, took the lead role in its formation. Everything still written about the COR will tell you it is still Legal to this day.
But don’t expect the Kirk to tell you that!
I recently read an article about ‘The demise of the Church of Scotland’ or the Kirk as we know it. The writer of that article believes the Kirk will no longer exist in it’s present form by 2046! He comes to that conclusion as the Church itself begins to look at it’s future of dwindling congregations and ever fewer Ministers coming into the Ministry. Of course, empty pews bring in little cash to maintain old churches.
There are many reasons why this has happened, my own thoughts can be summed up in one word, ‘compromise’!
I say that because the evangelical arm of the Kirk is actually thriving! But it’s not my intention to enter into a discussion about secularism within the Kirk, but rather to point out that asking the Kirk to take a stance on the COR today, will be a fruitless expedition!
Apart from the fact that it would take about 10 years ‘ worth of committee meetings to come to any conclusion, at the end of it, they would probably fall off on the wrong side of the fence! Why do I think that? Because they have become as much a part of the establishment as our Holyrood MSPs have!
So, they will not upset the apple cart now, they never do, hence their demise.
This saddens me, I was brought up in the Presbyterian Faith, I still have Faith, but not in the Kirk!
They were once the Spiritual/moral backbone of this country as we see in the COR, but now they distance themselves to the detriment of Scotland.
So, it is to us to stand on those Rights and Claim back what is rightly ours, in Law!
